Education and Social Facilities
A comprehensive education from preschool to grade 12 is available in Altona's four fine schools: Elmwood Elementary, West Park School, Parkside Junior High, and W.C. Miller Collegiate. Altona schools offer up-to-date teaching methods with state-of-the-art technology, taking your child from the basic three "R's" to vocational and
university preparation. Altona educators are a well-chosen, dedicated bunch who approach teaching with the personal interest often lacking in larger, urban centres.
The Regional Alternative Education Centre provides a place for mature students of all ages to continue their education. They offer accredited high school courses for those looking to complete Grade 12 or upgrade their skills for re-entry into the job market.
Kiddie Sunshine Centre, the local day care facility, provides an important social service to young, working families in Altona. A preschool program is also offered here, all conducted by a qualified, loving staff.
The Station, a youth drop-in-centre, is an upbeat, safe place for local teens to get together with their friends.
Kids aren't the only ones having fun in Altona! The Altona Senior Citizens' Club is the spot where area seniors meet and take advantage of a wide range of activities.
The Ebenezer Home, the Ebenezer Manor & Apartments, and the Friendship Manor provide a place to call home for some of Altona's older residents. They also offer various necessary levels of medical and social care to suit individual needs.
The Altona and District Branch of the Canadian Association for the Mentally Handicapped (ADAMH) supports three residences and the Occupational Training Centre (OTC), a workshop where the mentally challenged can learn and develop new skills.
Whether it's an exclusive business conference or a large social function, Altona offers space for every need. Meeting rooms are available at the Golden West Plaza, the Altona Mall, and the Altona Civic Centre, all conveniently located downtown. The Rhineland Pioneer Centre and the Altona Senior Citizen's Club are two options for banquets, socials, seminars or gatherings. Both sites boast modern kitchen facilities and stage areas for entertainment.
