Altona : Local Events : Winter Carnival

Winter Carnival

Altona's Annual Winter Festival provides an opportunity for everyone to get out and truly enjoy Canada's Great White North. The Festival, which is held the first Saturday in February, offers a chance to explore some of winters traditional pastimes as well as some not so traditional ones. Events, such as Cardboard toboggan races, tallest snowman building competition and a Candy Scramble at the Nature Pond, brings out the kid in everyone.

For those who seek a fast pace thrilling winter experience, there are free snowmobile rides available. But for those who want to take the time to view winter's scenery, there is the traditional horse drawn sleigh.

The Snow Creations competition is a chance to show off Altona's artistic talent. Either individuals or groups start with a simple pile of snow and transform it into something spectacular. The final creations can range from the traditional to whimsical.

There are chances to warm those frozen fingers and toes with a wiener roast at the Buffalo Creek Nature Pond. And what could be warmer than a chili competition located at the Altona mall. With a chance to either compete or sample the results the chili is a great way to chase away the chills.

A game of pond hockey provides a glimpse at the past and a chance to reminisce about the days before hockey rinks became a standard in every town.

There a few unconventional events, such as an Ice Cream toss and a Snow putting Competition, that shows just how creative Canadians can be in the winter. With prizes for the competitions combined with some of winter's finest traditions it makes for a full day of fun. Round it all off with a candle light walk through the park and you have a perfect ending to a great day.
