Altona to Host 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto

CurlManitoba is pleased to announce that the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto will be held January 26-30 in Altona, Manitoba. The event will take place in the Millennium Exhibition Centre.

CurlManitoba Executive Director Shane Ray commented. “Curl Manitoba is pleased to continue our strong tradition of brining top level curling events to communities that have previously not had the opportunity to host major curling or sporting events. We are confident that Altona will put a first rate Championship that spectators and competitors will remember. We are pleased to work with communities on events that allow them to showcase their communities and community spirit.”

The 2011 Scotties will be co-chaired by Al Friesen and Wendy Friesen. Al Friesen commented “We are excited about this opportunity and we thank Curl Manitoba for their vote of confidence.”

This will be the first time the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto will be held in Altona. This 16-team women’s event will see some of Manitoba’s top women curlers compete for the Provincial Championship. The winner will go on to represent Manitoba at the 2011 National Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Recent hosts include Killarney (2010) Neepawa (2009), Gimili (2008) and Morris(2007).

About the Millennium Exhibition Centre (MEC) and Altona
The Millennium Exhibition Centre (MEC) which opened in the Fall of 2004 is a state of the art 75,000 sq. ft. multi-use recreation facility. Its main features are an 85 x 200 sq. ft. ice surface arena with seating for over 700, a running/walking track on the mezzanine, and short court facility. The four-sheet curling rink has both ice level and second level viewing and includes a lounge. The centre has meeting rooms, concession areas, kitchen facilities, and can seat over 400 for banquets. Altona, located in the heart of the bountiful Red River Valley, is an attractive, safe, caring community, rich in spirit and pride. With its unique blend of old-fashioned values and modern ideas, few communities can compare to Altona’s rich cultural, recreational and educational services, as well as its great employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
