Council

Melvin Klassen, Mayor

First elected to council in 1998, Mel Klassen has served as Mayor since 2002 and in the 2006 municipal election he was re-elected by acclamation. Mel and his wife Margaret were school educators and Mel held an administrator’s position in the Altona area for 30 years before retiring. Mel was instrumental in organizing Altona's minor baseball program along with their senior slow pitch program.

Mel has served the Credit Union for many years, both locally and provincially. Formerly first vice-president of Credit Union Central of Manitoba, Mel was appointed to the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation Board of Directors by the Provincial Government in 2001. He also co-chairs the Board of Directors of the SunBelt Development Group.

Melvin was elected to the position of Central District Urban Director for the AMM Board of Directors in November, 2006.

Mel and Margaret raised their three children in Altona. They enjoy spending time with their four grandchildren, traveling and gathering together with family and friends.
 
Earl Dick, Deputy Mayor, Councillor

Earl was first elected in 2002 and serviced as a Councillor for the first four year term. As of 2006 election has taken on the responsibilities to include the position of Deputy Mayor.

Earl is also Chair of Works and Operations Committee which deals with the operations of the protective services, transportation, public utilities and environment. Earl serves as a representative on behalf of the Town on the Morden & District Veterinarian Board and the Inter –Municipal Shared Services Committee.

Earl and his wife Patti have raised there three children in Altona. Earl and Patti enjoy bbq’s out in their backyard with family and friends.

Earl has volunteered for many in organizations as the Altona Maroons, Oakview Golf & Country Club. For many years Earl has been the leader in organizing the Terry Fox Fundraising Golf Tournament and runners for the Cure for Cancer run in Winnipeg.
 
Terry Wiebe, Councillor

Terry was elected to Council in 1994 and has served residents of Altona for the past fourteen years eight of which held the position of Deputy Mayor.

Terry is a committee member of the Works & Operations Committee and the Community & Social Development Committee. Terry serves as President of the Altona Community Development Corporation, and represents the Town on Community Futures Triple R, Altona Airport Commission, Altona CARE Board, Manitoba Sunflower Festival Committee and is Chair of the Immigration Coordinating Committee.

Terry and his wife Roma and their two children maintained their roots in Altona and have taken over the family business, Wiebe’s Funeral Home. Both children are presently in Winnipeg furthering their education.
 
Ted Klassen, Councillor

Ted Klassen has served the Town residents on Council for since 1994. Ted represents the residents on the following committees; South Central Regional Library Board, Pembina Valley Development Corporation, Lower Red River Water Commission, Pembina Valley Recycling Network, and Altona & District Health Care Board.

Ted’s interests lie in politics, education, environmental concerns, arts and culture.

Ted Klassen, has been an educator in Altona for many years. Ted and Violet raised their three sons in the community. All three boys are busy continuing their education.
 
Tim Fast , Councillor

Tim Fast was elected to Council in 2006. Tim serves the town residents as Chair of Finance & Administration which deals with budget, taxes and all financial aspects of the Town’s financial departments. Tim also represents residents on the Altona & District Chamber of Commerce, Pembina Valley Development Tourism Division, Altona Curling Club Liaison and the Staff Negotiating Committee.

Tim and his wife Denise raised their three children in Altona where Tim works for Friesens Corporation. Tim enjoys fast cars, long walks and a good round of golf.
 
Don Braun, Councillor

Don Braun served on Town Council from 1972-74 and in 2006 he was re-elected. Don serves as a committee member on the Finance & Administration, and Community & Social Development. He represents Council as a Board member on the Altona & District Health Care Board.

Don and Lorna reside in Altona where he recently retired from Braun Drug where he served the community for many years as a Pharmacist. Don & Lorna enjoy traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren, they also enjoy a good round of golf.
 
Ann Kroeker, Councillor

Ann was first women to be elected to Town Council in 2006. Ann is Chair of the Community & Social Development which deals with recreational services, parks, trails, CARE program and the Altona cemetery. Ann represents the Town on the Altona Bloom Committee, Altona Playground Committee, and the Town’s Annual Fundraising Committee.

Ann & her husband Harv have raised their two children in Altona. For 20 years they worked together to organize the local Christmas hampers. Ann also served as School Trustee for Border Land School Division for nine years. Ann works with the C.A.R.E. a nonprofit support service to Seniors organizations in the community.
