MAYOR’S DESK - Edward R. Klassen

In May, I had the privilege of attending the 64th annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference. This is a four-day convention, which addresses issues that face all municipalities across Canada. Some of the issues that were discussed were greenhouse gases, the global responsibilities towards emission controls and the quality of life, as it exists, including homelessness and poverty. Discussions were held on the importance of world fresh water including a resolution to address
the need for comprehensive standards for all water across Canada because of the contamination we have now heard about in a number of communities. The Canadian lumber soft wood issue with the United States and the Prairie Province crisis concerning agriculture, seemed to be Canadian issues and as such should be Federal issues as well as provincial. A lot of discussion as well on the national highway system and the fuel taxes, how the fuel tax should be designated for the purpose of
upgrading the road system. The need for a Federal Policy on Economic Development was also highlighted, some other resolutions that were accepted were: a national strategy against crime, the removal of Federal taxes for farm fuels and a lot of debate on evaluation of Bill C-68 concerning the Firearms Act. This is a short overview of the information at the convention. Have a safe and enjoyable summer as we approach the summer holidays in July and August.

The matter of a new medical clinic is still moving ahead even though the original location at the Golden West Plaza is no longer an option. An alternative location utilizing the same concept of a clinic combined with living accommodations is being pursued. In addition the design process for the new exhibition centre is moving along nicely. To date approximately $3 million of the projected cost of $3.5 million is in place. The remaining $.5 million needs to be raised prior to start of
construction, hopefully in 2002 or earlier if funding can be achieved.
The Altona Community Development Corporation has openings on its Board. If you have an interest in community development in Altona please consider putting your name forward. Call me at 324-6468 and I can provide you with more information.
