MAYOR’S DESK - Edward R. Klassen

I would like to take this opportunity to share a letter I received from the Mayor of our sister city Emerald Shire, Australia;

"Dear Ed:

As the Mayor of Emerald Shire I would like to thank you for the kind words delivered by your Queen Allison Giesbrecht, and Princess Cynthia Penner. It was once again wonderful to hear from you.

Allison and Cynthia and their families were, as usual, wonderful representatives for the Town of Altona. They participated in all our Sunflower Festival events as well as the Centenary of Federation Celebrations held throughout the Central Highlands at the same time.

The weather was kind for them and I know they enjoyed their time with us immensely as we enjoyed hosting them.

Our Festival and Centenary Federation Celebrations were a tremendous success with many visitors and locals joining in the events over the time. Our Sunflower Queen crowning was an enjoyable night and it is a pleasure to introduce to you Kristy Brosnan, our Queen, and Petrina Birch, our Princes, along with their families. Both girls are terrific ambassadors and I know will join in with your celebrations and help to enhance the already strong relationship that exists between our towns and regions.

Finally, our best wishes for your Festival and I hope your town and community continues to prosper and grow in the next twelve months.

Yours faithfully, Councillor Peter Maguire

Mayor—Emerald Shire Council"

I would like to take this opportunity to THANK all those volunteers for making the 2001 Manitoba Sunflower Festival successful once again!

Councillor's Corner - by Vaughn Stephenson

“Altona, an attract, safe, caring, progressive community, which provides quality cultural, recreational and educational services for all ages and is capable of providing employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.”

This mission statement truly is a description of our community

In this month’s newsletter, I want to encourage each citizen of Altona to be an ambassador for our great community. One does not have to travel far from our homes to recognize all the advantages and opportunities Altona offers each of us. Visitors to our Town all comment on the attractiveness, cleanliness, services available and just overall quality of Altona as a community and many state “ I could see myself living here.”

As we plan our growth into the future , we all recognize that our population must increase for our Town to survive. Each one of us must realize that in order for our standard of living, the services we have come to expect and property values to remain constant , we all need to become involved in the promotion of our Town. We all have a vested interest in what happens today and tomorrow.

Let’s all do our part in securing Altona’s future. Brag about your Community every chance you get!

Altona Cemetery Donation Policy

In efforts to beautify the Altona Cemetery the Town of Altona Council has recently adopted the following “Cemetery Donation Policy”.

The Town of Altona is committed to the beautification of the existing cemetery and the area set aside for future expansion. These improvements will be carried out according to the Council adopted “Cemetery Development Plan” and scheduled as funds become available. In that regard the community is encouraged to participate by making tax deductible contributions under one of the following programs. All contributions will be recognized on a permanent donor wall if desired.

1) General Improvements - under this program, as funds become available, improvements shown within the Council approved “Cemetery Development Plan” will be done.

2) Commemorative Trees - under this program a commemorative tree may be planted in a location designated within the “Cemetery Development Plan”. The donor may affix a small plaque, of a pre-approved size, at their own expense.

The Town will assume maintenance of responsibility for all upgrades funded through this program, with the exception of plaques. Funds may be contributed through the Town Administration Office.

If you have an question or would like to participate by donating a commemorative tree please contact the Altona Town office at 324-6468.
