MAYOR’S DESK - Edward R. Klassen

The Webster Dictionary defines volunteers as “ One who offers services, joins force, etc., of his own free will, v.i. offer oneself” and the Town of Altona has been blessed with many volunteers who unselfishly dedicate their time and talents to help our community grow and prosper. The Town Council would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone for their hard work and dedication to their fellow residents and our community, not only for this year, but for so many who have been volunteering year after year. Volunteers are special people and the Town of Altona has many special people. “ Thank you and our sincere appreciation.”

Mayor & Council

Council joins me in extending our sincere appreciation.

Age & Opportunity Show

Along with local realtors the Altona Community Development Corporation participated in the Age & Opportunity Show in the Convention Centre in Winnipeg. This was a great opportunity to promote our Community to individuals looking to move out of the urban setting to a quiet, safe and attractive community like Altona. When you attend a show like Age & Opportunity you realize how easy it is to promote a town like Altona, with its many attributes such as retail outlets, recreational activities for the young to the seniors, churches, health facilities, variety of housing and emergency services.

We had many people visit our booth with a variety of questions and positive comments about our Community. A highlight of the weekend was when Altona’s display won recognition by being voted “Exceptional Display”. Thanks to Grace Braun for the organization of this event and all those who took time out of their busy schedule to help work at the booth to make this a very successful venture. We feel that the time spent at this forum was worthwhile in helping put Altona on the map.

Councillor's Corner - by Richard Martel

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the work the Health Promotions Committee has been doing this last year. As many of you may know the Committee was formed to help with doctor recruitment and to deal with funding request from the local Health Foundation. We were very successful in recruiting two doctors for our hospital and now have four doctors working out of the Altona Medical Clinic. This brings me to the new clinic that is now being built across from the hospital. With four doctors working out of our clinic, the need for a new and larger facility became a major concern. The local municipal bodies of Rhineland, Gretna, Montcalm and Altona have jointly come to an agreement on building the new clinic, but there is a need for funds to do the inside of the building. In the next few months we will be asking the public for donations to raise funds to do this. All donations from the community’s involved will be a great help in finishing the interior of the clinic. For those that wish to make a donation in this tax year, tax deductible receipts will be issued by the Town office.

Thank you

Richard Martel

“The Older, Wiser Driver” The Altona Police Service invites all seniors to attend an information session for Senior Drivers.

The session will provide seniors with an awareness of their safe driving ability and offers pointers that will help senior drivers assess their own capability behind the wheel. We encourage all senior drivers to attend. The Altona Police Service believes that this will be a very helpful, informative session for seniors.

Motorists please take a second look at all intersections and attempt to make eye contact with the pedestrian as they cross in front of you.

Unmanned Crosswalks

They are located at Elmwood School, West Park School, Parkside, and 5th Street N.W. Please watch for students crossing at these crosswalks. When a student is standing at one of these crosswalks with their hand extended forward ALL on-coming traffic must stop as the pedestrian has the right of way.

Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and as in past years the streets are full of costume clad Trick or Treaters. Please utilize extra caution while operating your motor vehicle on October 31st.

We remind parents to encourage the use of makeup rather than masks, if masks are used please ensure that they have large eye holes, this is in order to facilitate better vision.
