Mayor’s Desk - Edward R. Klassen

At our 2002 planning session Council and staff discussed the issue of business taxes and business licencing fees. This was one issue that we had discussed previously however, we had been lax in enforcing it. Our first thoughts were that it was our responsibility to support and protect our retail and business sectors in Altona and for this reason we established a revised fees and charges by-law.

It has never been our intention to slight our neighbours in the surrounding R.M. Council, staff and myself have received a number of telephone calls and had visits from some concerned business owners residing outside the Town of Altona. We appreciate your comments and concerns voiced, which have been constructive and informative. We are in the process of reviewing our By-law 1582 – “Fees and Charges By-law” and we will be addressing this at our next Council meeting.

The message I want to leave with our neighbours in the R.M. is that we appreciate you as friends and members of a larger community who do business in Altona.
We are open to your comments and as Council takes another look at this by-law that your concerns will have been addressed. As our motto says: “You’re Always Welcome In Altona!”

Councillor’s Corner - Melvin Klassen

In a recent “Echo article” it was noted that the Chief Administrative Officer of the Town of Altona, Jim Spencer, had reported that 6 to 8 immigrant families (from Germany) should be arriving in Altona this spring. The Council sees this as very positive news, as this means that these immigrants chose Altona as a place where they want to establish their new home. This comes as good news to many of our businesses as they have been telling our community that they are in need of specialized expertise in many of their places of business. Hopefully this also means that their experiences in Altona will be such that they will relay their positive experiences back to their homeland and encourage some of their friends—thinking of making such a move—to think of Altona when they do make their decision.

How will we react to their presence in our community? Hopefully, we will not just sit back and let them fend for themselves. We pride ourselves in saying that we are an open and friendly community, realizing that most of us were immigrants to this beautiful area only some generations ago. I believe that if we accept the fact that they come from different cultures and backgrounds and open our arms to them that this can be a very positive experience for all. Let’s challenge ourselves to be an accepting and open community.
