Mayor’s Desk - Edward R. Klassen

I would like to take this opportunity to share a letter I received from the Mayor of our sister city Emerald Shire, Australia;

“Dear Ed: As the Mayor of Emerald Shire I would like to thank you for the kind words delivered by your Queen, Tara Sawatzky. It was once again wonderful to hear from you.

Tara and her family were, as usual, wonderful representatives for the Town of Altona. They participated in all our Sunflower Festival events as well as the Year of The Outback Celebrations held throughout the Central Highlands simultaneously.

The weather was kind and I know they enjoyed their time with us immensely as we enjoyed hosting them.

Our Festival and Year Of The Outback Celebrations were a tremendous success with many visitors and locals joining in the events. Our sunflower Queen Crowning was an enjoyable night and it is a pleasure to introduce to you Melissa Robbins, our Queen, and Carly Woodward, our Princess, along with Melissa’s friend, Steele Childs and Mrs. Woodward. Melissa and Carly are terrific ambassadors who, I know will join in with your celebrations and help enhance the very strong relationship that exists between our towns and regions.

Finally, our best wishes for your festival and I hope your town and community continues to prosper and grow.

Yours faithfully,
Councillor Peter Maguire
Mayor– Emerald Shire Council”

I would like to take this opportunity to THANK all those volunteers for making the 2002 Manitoba Sunflower Festival successful once again!

ELECTION - 2002

I would like to encourage those individuals wishing to serve on the Town of Altona as a Councillor or as Mayor to enter their names for the fall 2002 elections to be held on October 23rd. I have had the privilege to serve on Council for nine years and as Mayor for four. Though at times there were challenges, I have enjoyed working with and for our community. Thank you to all residents for your support throughout my time in office.

If you are interest in running in the upcoming election please contact the Town of Altona administration office at 324-6468.

Mayor Edward R. Klassen

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS -
    - ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT THEM?

Civic elections will be held across Manitoba this Fall. October 23rd, 2002 is the date elections will be held in most jurisdictions. Are you thinking about running as a candidate? Here are a few basic bits of information that you should know.

  1. Do I qualify as a candidate?

In order to qualify as a candidate you must be:
    • a Canadian citizen
    • at least 18 years of age on the day of the election
    • a resident of Manitoba
    • an elector of the jurisdiction
    • not subject to any disqualification under The Municipal Act or any other Act.
  2. What is an elector?

An elector is someone who is:
    • a Canadian citizen who is the full age of 18 years at the date of the election
    • a resident of the jurisdiction for at least six months at the date of the election, or an owner of land in the jurisdiction for at least six months at the date of the election
    • not subject to disqualification under The Local Authorities Election Act or any other Act from voting
  3. If I am interested in running as a candidate, what to I do?

During the month of September there will be a number of election notices advertised in newspapers and posted on bulletin boards. These notices will basically tell you to obtain nomination papers from the Returning Officer for the jurisdiction in which you would be interested in running as a candidate.

Here in the Town of Altona the Town Council consists of a Mayor and six Councillors. If you are interested in running for Mayor or one of the Councillor positions and meet the above mentioned qualifications then watch the Red River Valley Echo and local bulletin boards for the “NOTICE OF NOMINATIONS”. These notices will give you further information.

Unmanned Crosswalks

They are located at Elmwood School, West Park School, Parkside and 5th Street N.W. Please watch for students crossing at these crosswalks. When a student is standing at one of these crosswalks with their hand extended forward ALL on-coming traffic must stop as the pedestrian has the right of way.
