On behalf of the Altona & District Health Care Board, I would like to thank those who attended the grand opening of the new Medical Centre. As Mayor, I had the privilege to participate in this event and felt great pride for the accomplishment of the four municipalities (Town of Altona, Town of Gretna, R.M. of Rhineland and the R.M. of Montcalm), the Doctors and the clinic staff.
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to make this new facility a reality!
Construction has begun on the new Exhibition Centre which is scheduled to open the summer of 2003.
The Public Works department has been busy with replacing sidewalks, new pathways, repairing streets and keeping our parks and streets clean. A job well done.
With the summer months coming to an end and an election just around the corner I would like to take this opportunity to encourage those interested in running in the upcoming election to please contact the Administration Office at 324-6468.
Mayor Edward R. Klassen

As Canadian citizens we are privileged to enjoy some fundamental freedoms that many people across the world can only dream about. Through the efforts of leaders such as John Diefenbaker, Lester B. Pearson, and Pierre Elliot Trudeau we have established the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This charter allows all peaceful assembly and association.
As citizens of Canada we know that we have these freedoms but are we at the stage in our development as a country that we take these freedoms too much for granted?
On October 23 there will be Municipal and School Board elections all across Manitoba. These elections are an excellent opportunity for any interested citizen to be involved in the democratic process and take advantage of these freedoms.
To be involved is a right and also a privilege, which is wasted if not exercised.
Involvement can have different facets:
First step: stick your neck out and allow yourself to be nominated as a can candidate for municipal office or school board.
Second step: regardless of your decision on the first step make certain that you get involved in the issues that are being discussed in you municipal and school community.
Third Step: The most important one... Get Out And Vote!
We have all heard from the radio and newspaper media that Municipal and School Board elections generally do not bring out more that 30 – 35% of the population to vote. On a representative basis that means 4 voters out of a population of 10 determine the outcome.
You Can Make A Difference!
Melvin Klassen
Deputy Mayor
