and entrepreneurial opportunities."

Mayor’s Desk - Edward R. Klassen

This will be my final article to you as Mayor. It has been a very busy four years, we as Council have been very progressive and have been involved in many projects that have resulted in substantial growth for our community. I want to extend my appreciation to you the citizens for your support not only for the past four years but also my previous three terms as Councillor and Deputy Mayor.

I feel it important that we, must not only work well in Council, however we need to work well with our staff as well as you the citizens. As I have said before, we all have a stake in this community and it is how we support it that will be instrumental for the future.

We have good relations with our neighbour, the R.M. of Rhineland Reeve and Council and the municipalities beyond. It is vital that we continue to grow in this relationship to provide a positive environment for our area at large.

I will look back at many good memories. I have had the opportunity to meet many people and to help, in some way, to make this a better community.

My sincere best wishes to our Chief Administrative Officer and staff, the new Mayor and Council for the next four years.

Mayor Edward R. Klassen

Altona Fire Department

Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries

  • Although smoke alarms are present in 94% of our homes, 20% do not work, mostly because of dead or missing batteries.
  • Roughly 80% of fire deaths result from fires in homes without working smoke alarms. Half of the home fire deaths resulted from fires in the small percentage of homes ( 6 percent ) without smoke alarms.
  • If a fire occurs, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fires nearly in half by providing an early warning and providing critical extra seconds to escape.
  • Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths.
  • The National Fire Code requires a minimum of one working smoke alarm on each level of the home, located in the sleeping area.
  • In addition to changing smoke alarm batteries, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years.
