On Monday, January 27th, I was fortunate to be able to attend the annual meeting of the Altona MCC Community Assistance Center Inc. This group of volunteers, consisting of retired individuals whose average age is 70+, have built up a thriving business in our community and donated a considerable amount of money to the Manitoba MCC programs. As a Town we commend them for their industrious and enthusiastic spirit. Upon thinking about this group of volunteers, I was reminded of the vast
number of volunteers that enrich and contribute so much to our Town and surrounding communities. Organizations such as: Altona & Area Food Bank, The MCC Store, Optimists, Lions, Elks, Adam H, Health Care Auxiliaries, Altona Figure Skating Club, Minor Hockey and Baseball organizations (to name some) are all spearheaded by individuals who freely give of their time and efforts to make our Town a better place. This summer (August 21st – 24th) we will be hosting the largest baseball
tournament in Manitoba! The Western Canadian Baseball Tournament (comprising of Peewee AA, Bantam AA & Midget AA) has been granted to our community by the Manitoba Baseball Association, because we have proven again and again that we deliver when we are asked to get involved in such a project. We will again call on volunteers to make this event a success, and it will be successful! So to all you volunteers serving our community, Thank you for your efforts in making our community what
it is today!

The first four months of being on the Altona Town Council have gone by very quickly. I have learned a lot in a short period and still have much more to learn. I started by attending the week long Association of Manitoba Municipalities Conference in Winnipeg, finding out that most municipalities and smaller towns have very similar problems with little or no funds to solve these problems. One of the issues that were addressed at the conference was that of smoking in public places and where
can smokers smoke and where they can not smoke. We, the Town of Altona, will be dealing with this in the new Millennium Complex. As you may or may not be aware, since January 1st the Rhineland Pioneer Centre is completely smoke free. The new Arena will be smoke free. So where is the issue? It’s the new Curling Club upper lounge and viewing area. The Curling Club ice area and lower viewing level will be smoke free. We are leaving it up to the Curling Club members to determine the
smoking rules of the upper viewing and lounge area. What a great opportunity for the entire new complex to be smoke free, here is our chance to be leaders and not followers! The new complex will be a wonderful addition to our community, and I personally look forward to curling in the new curling rink. On January 30, 2003 the Carman Golf & Country-Club members voted on the smoking issue for their clubhouse. The Carman Golf & Country Club clubhouse will now be smoke free. Rest
assured the Grand Opening for this yet unnamed complex will be a spectacular gala event. Make plans to attend!

NEW ORGAN AND TISSUE DONOR CARDS TO
BE ISSUED WITH LICENCE RENEWALS
Beginning February 2003 separate, standardized organ and tissue donor cards will be mailed out with all driver licence renewals, replacing the organ donor declaration now appearing on the back of the Manitoba driver’s licence.
The card’s blue colour and standardized format makes it highly recognizable for health care professionals. The new card size allows driver licence holders to insert it into the plastic pouch containing their driver’s licence or it can be kept with their Manitoba Health card. Individuals who have lost, not renewed, or turned in their driver’s licence can now retain the separated donor card, keeping it with their Manitoba Health card.
This universal donor card will be widely distributed through three channels: the Division of Driver and Vehicle Licensing, Manitoba Health, and the Manitoba Transplant Program. The Division of Driver and Vehicle Licensing is issuing the donor card over the course of the next twelve months as part of the driver licence renewal process. The transition to the new Manitoba driver’s licence and organ and tissue donor card will be complete by February 2004. Until that time, many
Manitobans may continue to declare their intention to be organ and tissue donors on their current licence.
