Mayor’s Desk

After several years of intense lobbying the Altona Town Council, the Altona Community Development Corporation and Perry McDonald signed an agreement for McDonald to develop an affordable housing complex in Altona. This complex, known as the “The Sunflower Villas” had their first home arriving in Altona on Wednesday, February 26th. This first home will hopefully be one of many and is considered affordable because after setup it will be available for approximately $75,000. The Town has been attempting to have some developer set up the new reasonably priced homes for several years and that seems to be coming to fruition with the Sunflower Villa development. Perry McDonald, a Winnipeg based developer, feels that there is great potential for this development to thrive in this area over the next several years.

You may have already heard the good news that the Town of Altona will host the “AA”, Midget, Bantam and Pee Wee Western Canada Baseball Championships August 21-24, 2003. That is a huge event for this Town. We will be able to showcase our community to well over 250 players, plus parents, and baseball fans from all across western Canada during this weekend. Keep posted as we move closer to these dates. We will be requiring volunteer help as we prepare diamonds and upgrade some of our facilities to host these games.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Public Works staff for the excellent job they do in keeping our streets and sidewalks clear during the winter season. It’s greatly appreciated!

Councillor’s Corner

As we endure the ending of a very frigid winter, I think we’re all looking forward to a warm spring.

I started my tenure as a Councillor by attending the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award presentations to local worthy recipients. These awards are given to those people that have given a lifetime of volunteered service to their communities. These Altona recipients were Ted Friesen and “Aunt” Olly Penner, my congratulations to you both.

With spring just around the corner we look forward to the Millennium Fundraising Dinner to be held on Saturday, March 22. This year’s dinner coincides with the Altona & District Chamber of Commerce, Citizen of the Year Award. I would like to congratulate David Friesen on this accomplishment. The evening promises to provide dinner, guest speakers, including Bob Picken sports commentator as well as musical entertainment. The proceeds of this fundraiser will be going toward the upgrading of the Pioneer Centre kitchen. The Altona Curling Club will be one of the benefactors of these upgrades, as this will be the “new” location of the ever-popular fish fry’s. I would like to invite everyone to attend this dinner, with a special challenge to all Curling Club members.

Councillor Brad Dueck
