| Mayor’s Desk by Mel Klassen |

During this past month the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nations invited our town to be represented as they hosted the Lt. Governor of Manitoba, The Honourable Mr. Peter Liba to a luncheon. We accepted the invitation and in his comments to the gathering the present Chief Terry Nelson informed us that the Anishinabe First Nations were the first nation in Canada to sign a treaty with the British Government. We were also informed that of the Bands $7.5 million dollar budget over one million
of those dollars is spent in Altona.
It’s been very encouraging to see the number of new housing starts in Altona over the course of this year. We have had 11 permits for new housing starts applied for in the first five months of the year.
We are also anticipating some more growth in our Industrial Park, so the year 2003 looks like a very promising year.
The retail sector of the Chamber of Commerce gave the Altona Community Development Corporation an overview of the survey that some of you were gracious enough to complete earlier this year. It was quite apparent from the overview that as a consumer you wanted better product selection, more competitive pricing and more variety of stores. It was also very evident that the group representing the retail sector seemed determined to try to stem the flow going out of our community and they
were willing to look at some radical measures to remedy some of the concerns expressed by you.
Mayor Mel Klassen
