"Altona, an attractive, safe, caring, progressive community
which provides cultural, recreational and educational services for
all ages and is capable of providing employment
and entrepreneurial opportunities."

Mayor’s Desk

During this past year I have been reminded numerous times that we have a beautiful town. Visitors to Altona because of business, our Aquatic Centre, tournaments or just to visit remark invariably at how orderly, well kept and well planned our town appears to them. During the Sunflower Festival, members of some of the seniors slow-pitch teams commented that they had never been in Altona before but they would not have any difficulty leaving Winnipeg and living here because of the recreational facilities, well cared for yards and the appearance of it being a “safe” community. That prompted me to realize how fortunate we are that our town staff and council over the years have had a long term vision and a plan to accomplish that vision.

Presently the town is again involved in planning for the next several years. Because of an agreement with the R.M. of Rhineland in 1997 our boundary to the south is fixed for the next twenty years. Our residential development will occur mainly in the northwest or southwest corner of town. Since the new Exhibition Centre, the Aquatic Centre and the Centennial Park are all situated in the northwest corner, it stands to reason that lots made available in this area of town will be quite attractive to new home buyers. Presently we have two developers ready to open up that area. Perry McDonald and Ruth Penner (two developers) have sector plans and are ready to sell their lots, though they do have a concern about the Motocross track in close proximity to these developments.

They have been told over the course of planning their proposed developments that there is an agreement that the town owned Motocross site would be moved in the future. CanAmera Foods is concerned about the ever-increasing traffic along 10th that runs right through their plant site. They have asked Council to consider closing 10th to the public and constructing another street somewhat north of the present street. They are being more and more vigilant of security and feel that they need to place more controls over their operations. Ironically while all of these issues are surfacing there is also the real positive situation that all the lots in our present Industrial Park will be spoken for in the next 3-4 years. This growth in residential development and need for industrial space is a pleasant dilemma for our town to have, but it is also creating a problem for our Lagoona Motocross site. The old lagoon site has become one of the best Motocross tracks in all of southern Manitoba. Realizing that a conflict could develop, the Town of Altona, with the R.M. of Rhineland and the Motocross group have formulated a committee to address the issue of relocating the raceway to another area within the vicinity of Altona. It should be noted that the Town and the R.M. of Rhineland have continually stated that they want to work with the Motocross group in establishing another site. Hopefully by working together, we can keep the Motocross family in our area and create an atmosphere where they can have more extensive use of the facility.

Councillor’s Corner

Congratulations to the Sunflower Festival coordinators, Ralph Hamm and his entire committee on another very successful Festival. What fantastic weather! 258 Classic Cars at the Legends Car show in the park, over 450 Motocross riders at the Lagoona Race track, people from all over Southern Manitoba, North Dakota, Minnesota enjoying the Festival and seeing what Altona, as a community has to offer!

The visitors from Emerald, Australia had nothing but praise for our community and the friendly people that live here! This past month we also had visitors from South Africa, Dr. Bessie’s brother and wife, Michael & Marita Holland-Muter as well as Dr. Dan Gerber’s parents, Japie and Antjie Gerber. Here’s what they had to say about Altona.

“What a wonderful Town you have.” “I would like to move and live here in Altona.” “Going for a walk, is like walking in a garden.”

We do have a wonderful Town – Take the Time – Go for a walk, a bike ride, a car ride, check out our Centennial Park, our Aquatic Centre, our residential areas, our Industrial Park (north of Town) our soon to open, state of the art Millennium Exhibition Centre! We truly do have a community to be proud of, plus it’s only going to get better.

With the Canadian Cattle industry in chaos its time for all of us to put our beef where our mouths are! Fire up your Bar-B-Q and support the cattle farmer!

Dutch Elm Disease

Dutch Elm Disease Prevention & Control

The Province of Manitoba prunes and removes diseased trees from our community. To help prevent and control the spread of Dutch Elm Disease here’s what you can do:

Basal spray healthy elms with insecticide that contains the ingredient Chlorpyrifos (this should be done by a professional) Application should take place between August and the end of September.

Keep elms in healthy condition through pruning, regular watering and fertilization

Inject healthy elm trees with a registered fungicide

Wrap trees with tanglefoot band to trap elm bark beetles and prevent spring and fall cankerworm moths from climbing the tree trunk to lay eggs
