Mayor’s Desk

The weekend of August 22 – 24 was an eventful one as we hosed the “AA” Western Canada Baseball Championships for the PeeWees, Bantams & Midgets in our town. The weather cooperated and the events rolled out as smooth as clockwork. Visitors from the three Western Provinces were duly impressed with our Town and its baseball aquatic and recreational facilities BUT they were quite audible in their praise for our group of 70 plus yellow shirted volunteers that were constantly seen preparing baseball diamonds, doing the announcements and scorekeeping, working the food booths, hosting the teams and parents and manning the various headquarters. A fitting tribute was also held in honor of Gerry Rempel, a former “Builder” of minor baseball in Altona who died several years ago. An umpire’s comment to me summed up the weekend when he stated “That was a Class A performance by your group. Go for the Canadians in the next few years”.

Thanks to Menno H. Friesen, Ken Wiebe, their executive committee, the Town staff and the yellow shirted volunteers for going beyond the call of duty and demonstrating what this Town is capable of when we all work together.

Next on the horizon is the official opening of our Millennium Exhibition Centre. You are well aware of the opening date and the events that are planned for the “Grand Opening”. As we celebrate this big event for the Town and the surrounding community, let’s remember that this is to be an everyday meeting place for all ages of our residents. It does house a curling facility and an arena but it is much more than that. This complex also has facilities that accommodate: a running/walking track, a short court, multi-use fitness area and an arcade. Meeting & craft rooms have been added to allow local groups such as: artists, quilters, or other such groups to have space to exhibit their gifts. Remember to keep the date of Saturday, September 13th open so that you can help the Town celebrate this great event.

Councillor’s Corner

As I’m writing this note I have just changed the calendar to September, and I’m wondering where the summer has gone. My family and I have had a busy, enjoyable summer filled with camping and various outings. With all the spring rains we had I thought the mosquito population would take over any outdoor activities in town. But with the province and the town getting together to start a larvicide program we hope that in the future we can have less of the pesky insects in our area.

As I reflect on the summer I have come to realize that the volunteers of this community have also had a very busy summer.

I would like to thank everyone that participated in the Communities in Bloom program, all those that made the Sunflower Festival another outstanding event, and the many people that brought the Western Canadian Baseball Championships to our town.

I would also like to thank the Millennium Exhibition Centre grand opening committee for their time spent planning this fun-filled day. I would like to extend an invitation to everyone to come out and celebrate the Grand Opening of this wonderful facility that will be utilized by many generations to come. Please join us on Saturday, September 13th.

Councillor Brad Dueck
